steppa although only 19 years of age, zak burton or better known in the world of drum and bass as "steppa" is already some what of a familiar name classed as one of the most promising up and coming stars of the future... to quote a few "the new face of drum and bass!" originally born in london but now living in leeds, steppa was influenced at a young age by early 'dance/rave' acts such as 'the prodigy', a musical obsession with which soon naturally progressed and became a chosen career profession. steppa recalls "the rave scene divided into many individual different musical genres, however only one of these appealed which at the time was 'jungle' music combining hip hop and reggae flavor with its own unique sound, style and culture; jungle music also soon progressed and the production quality increased with producers becoming more experimental and diverse. drum and bass' took over from where jungle left off and helped the music lose its commercial edge returning to the underground. now an on going progression, ever expanding and breaking new boundaries, drum and bass music as we know it today is of such high quality containing elements from all aspects of the musical spectrum and more importantly appeals to a global audience no matter what race, creed or color!" practice, hard work and determination have enabled the step from bedroom dj to club dj and naturally now studio production... "i am currently studying a degree in music technology at doncaster college and am slowly building upon my home studio. i see production as the way forward and i am now deeper involved with the music i love. as i create my own sound and style i can express my own emotion and feeling through my tracks with which other people will hopefully appreciate!" steppa's first single debut release entitled "voodoo magic" b/w "breaking down" has recently been released on rizing records with which "voodoo magic" features on a "ministry of sound" "decadance bass in yer face" triple cd compilation alongside other artists such as andy c, zinc, hype, j. majik, peshay, so solid crew, and pied piper. more recently "breaking down" has also been licensed by sky television channel "trouble" and used as the musical accompaniment behind one of ten new adverts created in order to promote their underground dance music policy as well as fresh new urban acts. steppa himself and long-term friend mc mojo of good looking records were both selected by the television channel and together feature in their own advert. a previous spell working in the office of l. double's "flex records" helped steppa gain experience and knowledge not to mention contacts established. currently dj'ing world wide with previous bookings in america, belgium, estonia, france, germany, slovenia, sweden, switzerland, steppa also of course has a great deal of nation wide work including bookings at movement and residencies at "one nation" and "event horizon" to highlight but just a few. after already having his own featured article in premier drum and bass magazine "knowledge", worldwide dj work busier than ever, a current weekly primetime show on leeds premier underground music pirate radio station "move 99.9 fm", previous guest shows on yorkshires "galaxy 105 fm", i am sure you will agree that this is not the last to be heard of the one called... steppa! words : alice @ event horizon, leeds. steppa audio clips : » break ya neck » soul step » the big request http://www.djsteppa.co.uk » back
