Al Fougy has been involved on and off in the music business since 1990. Growing up he was influenced by disco classics, old school hip-hop, and rare grooves. From this his interests moved through the progression of Acid, Techno and House into Drum and Bass.

In 1990, Al Fougy became acquainted with the late Kemi Olusanya (aka DJ Kemistry) and Jane(DJ Storm)through a mutual friend. They took him to see Grooverider and Fabio play at the legendary club night, 'Rage'. This experience inspired him to take on the torch of breakbeat, bleep techno with bass and he began to promote 'Risk', a weekly he and fellow promoter Tom Mello ran in Boston.

After a year and a half of promoting, Al decided to concentrate on other realms, specifically fashion. During this brief hiatus, in '93 he went back to London and discovered a more progressive form of breakbeat, which was now termed jungle. This music had developed a sound whose precarious beat patterns and overpowering basslines pushed the bounds of existing dance music genres.

In 1995, Al spent some time in Tokyo, where he became even more infatuated with the Drum and Bass sound through going to clubs like Blue and Yellow. There he heard hometown jazz heroes UFO (United Future Organization) and others dropping jungle in their sets. This music had inspired him more than any other he had heard during his years of clubbing. Thus when he returned to Boston he returned to promoting and started a new venture in strictly jungle and never looked back.

Fast forward to 1998 under the moniker Phuturistic Bluez. As a DJ and promoter Al Fougy was responsible for bringing the best talent in the world to spin and perform at his club nite called 'Sessionz'. Alongside partner Roger Forbes they ran one of the most reputable weeklies in the States. Guests included Doc Scott (bi monthly resident), Grooverider+Fabio, Photek, Roni Size/Reprazent, LTJ Bukem, and many others. Frustrated by the lack of US representation amongst Drum and Bass record labels and producers and constant bouts with club management, Al decided to launch a label that would feature precisely what he was looking for in the music. During the middle of 1998 Al became acquainted with A-sides who runs both Fuze and East Side recordings. He completely understood Al's vision and determination and recommended that Al get in touch with Stage One to help him handle managing the business. And as they say, the rest is history.
